"Turtamu the Green Turtle and Colonel Gracia" Layout-Design and Animatic

"The Experiment on Background and Characters"

"Concept"

My whole concept about these term works is Layout Design and The animatic. I'm working on a story, in the first year in 2D animation class, which is created by me and Boss called " Turtamu the Green Turtle and Colonel Gracia". I'm using the same storyboard, but I will be more focusing on the drawing technique, the medium of color, and the most important thing is to combine hand-painting scenes and using computer programs to develop the scene. Further more I will pay attention on the "Empty Space" to give places for characters to act and to save time. I think it takes too much time to create one animation. If I could have my own animation in my portfolio, would be nice because it might give me some benefits for a future career.

"Drawing and Painting Styles"

I'm really interesting in Alison Snowden's style. She animated a cartoon called
"Second Class Mail" in the bottom of the page. I wish I could be able to create this
type of animation. Her cartoon was drawn so little and painted roughly, but it's very
effective. I like her style that she leaves the concept of "Animation is so much work
to do" behind, and acts oppositely from the concept to prove that she has got her
own animated style.

"Experiment Processes"
I did some experiment on BG medium and BG drawing. At first, I decided to use watercolor for the whole BG, but I found out that after the paper absorb the water, it is so curvy. When I scan it, there are too many dark spots in the BG, so I paint some outline onto the paper scan it and use photoshop to get rid of the dark spot. Then I painted again in photoshop. I drag the outline into photoshop and decrease the opacity to detail the painting with the watercolor effect.

Then I drew and painted the turtle, Turtamu by using photoshop again. However, the turtle will not be colored by watercolor, so I paint him roughly in photoshop. I also leave white space around the turtle to grasp audience attention on the character, but this character I left too much white space on it, and the edge of white space is too sharp.

The next character that I put into the painting is Colonel Gracia. This time, I pay more attention on white aura, and I get the exactly color that I want. Moreover, to have the same drawing style as Alison Snowden, I didn't draw the line neatly.

The character designs will be posted on this blog soon in the next few days to catch up my work with the class.

Principle of Life

This is a low dutch angle photo which gives a movement feeling. This is the stair in front of Environment building. K is the only character in this photo. He walked up stairs to show that we still need to move on and on. If you look carefully into this photo, you can feel that K is in the very first step. There is much longer way to reach the top of the building. It is so familiar to people live. Life is a long way to walk.

There is life everywhere, but we just don’t know it yet. People always look up or go straightforward. We only look down when we stamp on dog shit or stumble on something. This is a small tree, which is grown on the path. Even in this kind of desert area, there is still a life.

In this photo, I want to show about differences of lives. We can see a dead tree placed in the front of this photo. There are many kinds of trees here. They grew in different ways. Some is high, and some is low. Each of them is different from each other, but they also need to face the very same destiny, which is death.

Ansel Adam and Self-Portrait

Ansel Adam
This is a photo taken by Ansel Adam. It has a beauty of straight line, which leads your eyes to the mountain. This photo can give me two feeling, which are ending, and no ending. Because the street narrows into a line going on and on, this is giving me the no ending feeling. However, It has an ending feeling too because of the mountain.

This is the other kind of photo taken by Ansel Adam. The composition in this photo is very good. Two sides of the land are completely separated. Even though, it is black and white photo, he uses black tone color in the down left corner and in the top right corner. Gray tone color is used in the down right corner and in the top left corner.

I guess this is a photo taken in the air. It gives a confuse feeling when we look at the highways and cars. However, we can find peace in this picture also if we focus on some streets that have no car running in them.

Self-Portrait

This is my self-portrait painting. It shows that I love coffee. Every single day I need to drink one or two cup of fresh coffee, so the coffee beans turn in to my blood cell.

This is me sitting on the roof of a boat in the evening. Although, there is not much space on it, we can still see the depth of field.

This is an underwater photo. This is what I love to do. It shows how lively I am under water. Who said we can only breathe on the land.

Earth from Above, Paul Cezanne's Paintings, and Claude Monet's Paintings

Earth From Above

This is a photo of tank graveyard in Kuwait. I think that he takes this photo because he wants to show that war is nothing but death. The color combination of this picture is great. I think he also takes this picture because of the color combination. Brown tone color usually give warm feeling, but in this case, it gives the feeling death, abandons, and hopeless.

This photo is taken in Ivory Coast. In this photo, everything is white and green. However, there is a worker resting on cotton crops that is very contrast to most things in this photo. The contrast can give benefit for this photo. The first place that I look in this photo is the worker because we always focus on thing that is very different first. In this case, He is black in the white. It is familiar to a black sheep in a group of white sheep. We will look at the black sheep first because it’s different.

Paul Cezanne’s Paintings

This is a painting of Paul Cezanne, French artist. This painting is painted on a canvas by using oil as the medium. If we look closely to this painting, we can see that he has a very rough style. The brush stroke is very impressive. Although, the brush stoke is very rough, the warm green and yellow colors that he uses in this painting make it become smooth, and the brush stroke shows the line of surrounding environment.

This kind of painting cannot look close to it. Otherwise, we can only see the brush stroke. As far as we stand away from this picture, the more clearly we can see. I believe that this is a scenery painting of the mountain, a village, and the forest. I believe that he painted it on the top of another mountain. He uses color differently from the above picture, Forest Interior. This is a cool toned painting. In this painting, the green can refer to abundant and peace of countryside. The most interesting thing in this painting is after we see this painting from the distance; we want to come closer to analyze how he paints and to see his style.

Claude Monet’s Paintings

Monet works are very interesting. This is one of his works that attract my eye. Green color usually refers to calm. If this color is used on people paintings, it can refer to outgoing characteristic. This is very smooth painting, which is completely different from Paul Cezanne’s paintings. I can see the wave on the water. Sometimes, I can feel the movement of the water and lilies. However, I can feel sadness somehow in this painting. I believe that blue gives me that feeling. According to Pablo Picasso, he uses blue to draw a girl painting after his friend committed suicide because of the girl.

This painting is very opposite from what I have learnt. A basic painting theory of creating distance is using darker color in a near area and lighter color in a far area. However, he use lighter colors in the front and darker colors in the back. I believe that he intend to do it so because he wants to lead our eyes to the front first then the back. Further more, because the sun is hidden behind the cloud. The house and environment should be in the shadow.
